Dr. Ahime Ornelas, Principal
It is my sincere pleasure to serve as principal of Barrett Elementary in Crosby ISD. Barrett Elementary has a tradition of excellence that results from the commitment of our school’s staff and parents to the education of their students.
As an immigrant child from Mexico, my community molded me into the learner I am today. The instruction provided through the public school system helped open the doors to greater possibilities. I believe education can change the trajectory of a person’s life. My life experience strengthens my commitment to giving all students the chance to pursue a brighter future.
I am a proud graduate of the University of Houston Clear Lake (UHCL). I received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Master of Science in Educational Management and hold a principal certification. I am currently enrolled at UHCL as a doctoral candidate. I also have a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership. Go, UHCL Hawks! Over the past 20 years, I have served my school communities in various roles, such as bilingual teacher, writing coach, Family Involvement Coordinator, District Bilingual Specialist, Assistant Principal, and District Bilingual ESL Coordinator.
When away from the office, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. Without the support of my family and friends, none of my accomplishments would be possible.
I look forward to working with teachers, parents, and community members to provide our Barrett students with the best learning environment so that each student can reach their maximum potential.

Destiny Phillips, Assistant Principal
A proud Texan driven by purpose, grace, and a deep call to serve, Mrs. Destiny Faith Phillips brings over a decade of dedicated educational experience to Barrett Elementary. Her career spans impactful roles as a Master Teacher, Instructional Coach, Curriculum Writer, and Assistant Principal. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston, her Master’s degree from Lamar University, and served her community through AmeriCorps Teach For America. Currently pursuing her doctorate at Texas Southern University, she remains deeply committed to student growth and instructional excellence.
Grounded in values of humility and service, Mrs. Phillips views education as a collaborative, heart-centered calling. She is dedicated to partnering with students, staff, and the Crosby community to drive high academic achievement and meaningful learning outcomes. By pairing rigorous standards with patience, love, and high expectations, her mission is to lift up educators, walk alongside families, and empower every scholar to reach their fullest potential.
Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Phillips is a devoted wife, daughter, and proud baseball mom. As part of an Army family, standard values of honor, gratitude, and selfless service run deep in her home. Mrs. Phillips considers it a true blessing to join the Barrett Elementary family and looks forward to serving our community with warmth, purpose, and joy this school year.
